It's difficult not to gush. But I think I've done my share at the gig. Grateful Dead, I expected. Neil Young (woohoo!) and Dylan had to be. B.B. King was a pleasant surprise as was Dave Matthews Band. But Tin Pan Alley kind of fucked you beyond repair. Oh shit. Oh double shit.
But I think the originals were what made this gig super-special. Guitar, poetry and a voice from Heaven. And you wonder why I'm a "helpless" sycophant?

I have also been thinking about why Bertie chose to concentrate on academics and then teaching after college. I think I can understand. And I am proud that he is a respected teacher at SXC - and now HoD and Dean. That would not have happened without a lot of serious, concentrated, committed effort, over years. Yes, one can always dwell on what might have been - but those could just as well not have been. Bertie made a choice. He was committed to doing something, rather than tragically falling by the wayside like so many others. And yes, hearing Bertie last night - I was also sure that even now he can step into a very successful musical career. He is simply tremendously gifted.
SXC students must be ecstatic and proud!

But why do you think someone like Bertie must teach at NYU and live in Greenwich village? Is Calcutta not also a PLACE and are its folk not also PEOPLE, as much as NY and its dwellers are?! Is everything here only a pale come-down from the only real thing, viz USA, what happens there?
I like to think that above all, Bertie is ROOTED. And that's what makes him what he is.
i kinda agree with rama up there. not entirely for selfish reasons. but because i think this is what he thinks too.
its just sad that out here unconventionality (and budding musical geniuses) often have to bite the dust. But inspite of that, people stay, dont they? there must be something.
On a diff note, if his voice last night was so so SOOO good, can u imagine what it must have been like 30 years back. Oh my dear God!

It's not a strange fascination with the U.S. or anything. Greenwich Village was where Dylan first made his mark in the music industry - and NYU, because well, I figured he liked to teach! It was an obscure kind of compliment, but I guess it came across as derogatory or something!
At the end of the day, I'm glad he's here and as long as he's happy or satisfied, I'm no-one to say anything.
